The Swift
are crowned 2014/15 League Champions
New league champions The Swift played host to Greenisland
Working Men’s Social Club. With their
nearest rivals being held to a draw, Paul Roberts’ team clinched the title with
3 matches to spare. With session wins of 5-2 & 4-3 the hosts controlled
this match from the beginning. Dee Irwin opened his night with a break &
finish on his way to a fine brace, recent new signing Craig Crawley showed he
has got the hang of the rules with a well taken hat-trick and Andy Arbuthnot
completed the evening’s work for the hosts with a fine brace also. Best for the
visitors Michael Lowry & Andy Mackey with 2/3. The League title success guarantees The Swift entry into the NIPA Champions of Champions event on 28th June. Good luck to our new Champions.
Current champions The Greenisland Galacticos entertained the
Hitmen & Her and it was looking like the Monkstown team were going to put
right their last encounter which many thought they should’ve won by taking the
first 2 frames of the evening. However that was the last time they held the
lead as they only managed 1 more frame on the board as the Galacticos took
total control of the match. running out 11-3 winners. Shaun McAlister &
Chris Carson recorded well taken hat-tricks backed up by Trevor Whiteside &
Dean McDonagh both with 2/2. Best for the visitors Paul Henderson 2/3
The Scorpions placed host to league grinders The Whitehead
Trojans and needed a win to keep their slim chances alive for another week. The
hosts opened with the first 2 frames only for the visitors to reply with the
next 2 and so set the scene for the evening with both teams matching each other
frame for frame throughout the evening. With the visitors 4-3 down they took
the first 2 after the break and the lead for the first time. With the next 4 frames shared the Scorpions
needed veteran Davy Montgomery to win the last for a share of the points. A
great effort for a team that underwent major personal changes pre-season and
now look to consolidate second place over the remaining 3 matches. Best for the
hosts Paul Kerr 2/3, Davy Montgomery 2/2 and for the visitors Chris Hobson 2/2,
Olly Arnold 2/3
The Doagh Weapons travelled to the take on the Alpha and,
with 1 point the difference between third and fifth the Doagh lads were taking no chances with a
full strength team in attendance. The hosts got off to a great start taking the
first 3 frames before manager Tyler McConnell took the tie by the scruff
kicking off a 9 frame burst. Best for the hosts Angie Willis 2/3 and for the
visitors Tyler McConnell 2/2
The Teddy Bears played host to The Greenisland Colts and
looked to be continuing their march up the league, taking the first session 5-2. However Harry Warwick’s Colts took 4 out of
the first 5 of the second half to level the scores at 6 each. Teddy Bears
manager Dee McIlwaine selected a strong finish to the session with duo of
Stewart Kelly and Andy Lindsey delivering to take the match 8-6. Best for the
hosts Andy Lindsey 2/3 and for the visitors Colin Beckinsdale 2/3
The Cowboys travelled to take on the Whitehead Spartans and
took the first session 4-3 and an upset looked to be on the cards. After the
break the hosts regained control taking the first 3 of the session and a 6-4
lead. Tom Legget completed his brace to
stop the hosts’ momentum and new Carrick Masters Champion
Alan Corrigan completed a well taken hat-trick to level things up at 6 each.
Kenny English put the Whitehead men on the hill to set up an all manager last
deciding frame. Not for the first time this season Cowboys manager Hugh
McMurtry held his nerve and a share of the points for the travellers. Best for
the hosts Stephen McWhirter 2/3 Lee topping 2/3 and Kenny English 2/3.
