Teddy Bears 2-12 Swift
Scorpions 7-7 Greenisland Galacticos
Trojans 7-7 Spartans
Greenisland Colts 4-10 Hit Men & Her
Doagh Weapons 9-5 Greenisland WMSC
Cowboys 9-5 Eastway
Alpha 5-9 Warriors
Champions, the Greenisland Galacticos, travelled to one of the season’s early pace setters, The Scorpions, and they didn’t disappoint, taking a very tight first half 4-3. Derek Whiteside’s men put their heads down in the second half winning, the first 4 frames to guarantee themselves at least a point but the Scorpions showed why they have to be taken as serious contenders this term as long-time Scorpion stalwart Colin Rafferty and recently returned Darren Whiteside took the last 2 frames for a share of the points. Best for the hosts D Whiteside 2/3 and Johnny Mackay 2/2 for the visitors.
Greenisland Colts continued their new
adventure when they played host to the Hit Men & Her. Unfortunately their opponents are enjoying a rich
vein of form throughout the team with Sara Greenberg registering her second
hat-trick in as many weeks, Glen Russell bagging a brace and a steady 2/3 from
Paul Henderson & Andrew McMeekin. It wasn’t all bad news for the Colts as
team manager Harry Warwick reports his team are settling down with improvements
every time they play, best for the hosts Alan Blain with a nice 6 ball clearance
including a “tasty” black.
League
leaders The Swift needed to get back to winning ways after their shock exit
from the knockout cup last time out.
This week they played host to recent headline-makers, the Teddy Bears.
However, Build-a-bear it was not as the Swift team took no chances, fielding
their strongest team by far this term, winning the first session 5-2 and
destroying the Teddy Bears 7-nil in the second. Best of the night Kyle
Kirkwood, Stuart Mclean, Dee Irwin, Rab Butler, Andrew Arbuthnot all scoring
2/2.
The
Alpha team hosted Clare Roberts’ ever-improving Warriors team and, as usual,
had a great night other than the result as the Warriors took the sessions 4-3
and 5-2. Best for the visitors were Gee Crawley, Jean McIlroy and Derek Baird all
with 2/2 and for the hosts Johnny McComb also scored 2/2.
After
taking the Champions to a deciding frame in the cup last week, the Eastway lads
hoped to continue their form as they travelled to take on the Cowboys. It wasn’t to be as Hugh McMurtry seems to
have his team’s season up and running at last, winning the sessions 5-2 &
4-3. Best for the hosts Alan Corrigan with a fine hat-trick, Hugh McMurtry
2/2, Roy McMurtry and P McCaffrey both 2/3 and, for the visitors, M Greer 2/2.
The
Doagh Weapons, sporting their new team colours, hosted the Greenisland Working
Men’s Club and found themselves with a match on their hands as they trailed 4-3
at the break. However, as the Greenisland men found out, the Doagh lads had
plenty in reserve as they ran out 6-1 winners in the second session. Stand out
performances of the night would have to be Michael Higgins with two special 8
ball clearances, new boy Rab McCullough continues to impress with another fine
hat-trick, Iain Britton chipped in with a nice brace and Jeff Moore played a
cool cameo with 1/1. Best for the visitors R Brown 3/3.
In the most amazing derby match Whitehead Rangers Club and maybe even Carrick
League has ever seen, Trojans came back from 0-7 down at the interval to take a
deserved point in a 7-7 draw. It should have been a formality for the more
experienced Spartans but frame after frame slipped away and it eventually fell
to Neil McFaul, who ironically enquired about joining the Spartans only last
week, to sink the final black albeit by a fluke to send the orange shirted
Trojans wild with delight. Incredible stuff.
