Valkyries 7-7 Alpha. What a great match this was as the 2 teams battled it out for the right to stay off the bottom, with the losing team probably winning the Wooden Spoon in the Carrick & District Pool League 2011/12 season. Clare Webster's Valkyries got off to a good start winning the first 2 frames courtesy off 2011 Northern Ireland Ladies Champion M.McCourt and A.Galloway. Back came Alpha witha brace of their own through P.Templeton and L.Carson. Alpha enjoyed a 4-3 halfway lead as Templeton with his 2nd and A.Carson replied to a good win from S.Lennon. Another win for A.Carson made it 5-3 to the visitors but the match was soon tied at 5-5 as Galloway and Lennon registered their 2nd strikes of the night. The atmosphere was tense as the match entered Frame 11, but A.Hall held his nerve superbly to back double the black into the centre pocket to edge the Rathcoole team ahead on the night at 6-5. If ever a Captains innings was needed for the Valkyries it was now and in the ensuing black ball fight C.Webster sunk a long pressure shot to bring it back to 6-6 with 2 to play. It was Alpha who took the upperhand as L.Carson finished well in Frame 13. And so it was down to the final frame and once again a Captains innings from Webster rescued the match for the hosts as both sides settled for a point a piece. The Wooden Spoon spot is still up for grabs and with only 1 match each to play it is still finely in the balance. Great match, both teams 100% committed on the green baize.
