In one of the most exciting 2 legged ties ever seen in the Carrick & District Pool League, Jonny Thompsons Scorpions beat Home & Away Cup holders The Spartans in a sudden death play off frame to set up a Final tie against either the Barbarians or The Rockers. The Scorpions led 8-6 from the 1st leg in Whiteabbey last week but were left reeling after a 6-1 blitzing in the first half of this return leg in Whitehead. Spartans led 12-9 on aggregate now, needing only 3 more for victory but Thompson's lads dug as deep as they could in the 2nd session winning 5 out of the 7 frames to leave the match level after the 2 legs at 14-14. And cometh the hour cometh the man, the hero was Colin Montgomery Sr, albeit by an outrageous fluke on his last colour when looking dead and buried with the added bonus of landing plum on the black. He duly potted match ball in the 29th and final frame to send his team mates wild with delight as they contemplate a Cup Final to end their season on a high. This match really had it all, drama, excitement, tension, fantastic pool and a great comeback by the Scorpions to take it to a play off frame.
